Upon arrival in Chefchaouen, known for its striking blue-washed architecture, enjoy time wandering through the medina’s narrow cobbled lanes. Locals dressed in traditional attire add to the town’s authentic charm. After lunch, explore the main square and browse handmade wool garments, woven blankets, and local crafts before settling in for the evening.
Day 2: Chefchaouen – Meknes – Volubilis – Fes
After breakfast, depart Chefchaouen and head south to Meknes, one of Morocco’s imperial capitals. Often compared to Versailles for its grand design, Meknes is home to impressive gates such as Bab El Mansour and Bab El Khamis, as well as the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail. Continue to Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, an important spiritual town, where you will pause for lunch. Later, explore the remarkably preserved Roman ruins of Volubilis, featuring ancient roads, arches, and intricate mosaics. The day concludes with a drive to Fes.
Day 3: Fes – Guided City Exploration
Today is dedicated to discovering Fes, Morocco’s spiritual and cultural heart. Accompanied by a knowledgeable local guide, explore the ancient medina, a maze of lively souks, historic fountains, and religious schools. Visit landmarks such as the Royal Palace gates, the Jewish quarter, and Al Qaraouine University, one of the oldest centers of learning in the world. Throughout the day, witness traditional craftsmanship including leather tanning, metalwork, and ceramics. The afternoon allows time to continue exploring or relax before the evening.
Day 4: Fes – Azrou – Midelt – Ziz Valley – Merzouga
Leaving Fes, journey south through the Middle Atlas Mountains. Stop in Ifrane, famous for its alpine-style architecture and cool climate, then continue to the cedar forests of Azrou, home to Barbary macaques. After lunch in Midelt, travel through dramatic mountain landscapes and remote nomadic regions. In Erfoud, visit a fossil workshop to learn about ancient marine life preserved in stone. Continue to Merzouga, at the edge of the Sahara, where the desert landscape begins to dominate.
Day 5: Merzouga – Erg Chebbi – Nomadic Villages – Khamlia
After breakfast, set out on a desert excursion through the vast Erg Chebbi dunes near the Algerian border. Capture photos of rolling sand seas and contrasting volcanic rock formations. Visit a nomadic family to gain insight into traditional desert life, then pass through small Berber settlements such as Tamrdanite. In the village of Khamlia, enjoy a live performance of Gnawa music, a deeply spiritual rhythm passed down through generations of Saharan communities.
Day 6: Erg Chebbi – Rissani – Todgha Gorges – Dades Valley
Rise early to witness a breathtaking sunrise over the dunes, followed by breakfast before continuing west. Stop in Rissani, once a major trading center for trans-Saharan caravans and former capital of the Alawite dynasty. Wander through its lively market and traditional souk. Continue through Tinjdad and Tinghir before arriving at the towering cliffs of Todgha Gorges, a natural wonder ideal for walking and photography. The journey continues to the scenic Dades Valley.
Day 7: Dades Valley – Boutghrar – Valley of Roses – Skoura – Ouarzazate
After breakfast, travel along the Dades Valley, enjoying panoramic views of dramatic rock formations. Venture onto the Pist des Mille Kasbahs, accessible only by four-wheel drive, passing remote Berber villages such as Boutghrar and meeting nomadic families living in caves. Continue to the Valley of Roses, famous for rose cultivation and fragrant products. After lunch, pass through the palm oasis of Skoura, dotted with historic kasbahs, before reaching Ouarzazate.
Day 8: Ouarzazate – Ait Benhaddou – High Atlas – Marrakech
